Let us tell you about

the journey of the 10 painted turtle eggs!

The story of how we got the Turtle eggs is fairly short and fast. We were camping in Central Wisconsin and went on a bike ride. When we got back to our camp site we saw a turtle laying egg in a hole that she made (see above). We got to watch the whole thing. We saw her lay all 10 eggs and then saw as she worked hard to bury them. In true turtle fashion, the process took a loooong time.  We did some reasearch and found that it is very hard for baby turtles to survive in the wild. Few live.  So we decided to help the mama turtle out.  We retrieved the eggs and put them in bowls of dirt for the journey home.

Days 1 and 2 and 3

The eggs lived in their little bowls of dirt in a safe place until we were ready to travel home.

Day 4

We found a pretty cheap, but effective way to hatch the eggs. The contraption was called a ghettobater by the person on the internet who described it.  It was called this because it incubates the eggs in a controlled environment, but it is not an expensive commercially made incubator. For us, this was the best choice because it was quick and easy to make. When we first set it up the temp of the ghettobater inside where the eggs were was 80 degrees, and the humidity was unknown.

Day 5

The next day was kind of like the first day because there was really no change in observations, But the temp and humidity changed the temp was 84 degrees. And the humidity was 85%.

Day 6

The third day was different because for the observations because the sticks that was used to hold up the lid of the container inside started to grow white fuzz. So we decided to replace it with a round thing that would find the humidity of the container. So For the temp it was 84 degrees and the humidity it was 85%.

Day 7

Just like the 2nd day the fourth day had no change in observation, but there was a change. The temp was 84 degrees, but the humidity changed to 83%.

Day 8

For our observation we found that the dirt was damp. The temp was 83 degrees and the humidity 85%.

Day 9

Now this is where thing started to change all the dent in the 5 of the 10 eggs disappeared. So they look way healthier then before. The temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was 85%.

Day 10

An observation that we found was that the humidity was pretty high and wet. And the temp was the same 84 degrees. Also the humidity is 84%.

Day 11

One observation that we see is the temp and humidity is staying around 83 and 84. We are pretty sure it is because of the heater that we have in their is working. And there is also water at the bottom of the container. So that can be why. For the temp it is 83 degrees and the humidity is also 83%.

Day 12

There was no change that day for the observation. But the egg look really healthy. I could tell because there was no dents and there was no mold growing on the eggs. For the temp it changed to 84 degrees and humidity was 83%.

Day 13

For the eggs the humidity need to be in the 80's so the humidity is just right for the eggs. So were doing a good job. the temp was 85 degrees and the humidity was 83%.

Day 14

For a observation there was really no change from before. Except for the temp it was 84 degrees and the humidity was still 83%.

Day 15

The heater is being a big deal for the eggs it is keeping the temp at 84 degrees. Also the humidity is still at 83%.

Day 16

The observation for that day was that the humidity was slightly under, but the dirt was still damp. The temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was at 82%.

Day 17

For day 14 there was really no change in observation. We feel there will be no change in the next few weeks because of the process of incubation. For that day the temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was still 82%.

Day 18

Again just like yesterday there was no change at all including the temp and the humidity. Right now the eggs seem to be healthy, But we are doing research to find out more. The temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was as just like yesterday 82%.

Day 19

Threw out the last few day there was really no change but it will be like this for a while. Except we are still quite excited because we know that we are doing a good job. Because they are very healthy eggs and they are following the proccess. For Day 16 we the temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was again 82%.

Day 20

We did some reasearch and found that turtle eggs start out pink and then threw out the weeks the pink will start to dissapear. So we are doing a great job because are egg are almost fullly white, But there is a little pink on the bottom of the egg. The temp was 85 degrees and the humidity was at 82%.

Day 21

The eggs that day were doing great. But we dont want to disturb them as much. So we will fill you in on how they are doing every other day for now on. The temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was 82%.

Day 23

For day 22 there was again no change, but we know that they are fine. so We are starting to check every other day so we dont disurib the eggs as much. For day 22 the temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was 82%.

Day 25

Finally there is an obervation the water in the coolor at the bottom look clear, but when we felt the water it felt slimy so we are going to have to change the water. So for day 24 the temp was 84 degrees and the humidity was 82%.

Materials:

-Small cooler

-Plastic container with lid

-Aquarium heater

-Thermometer

-Something to tell the humidity

-Small bowls or blosck to hold the plastic container with the eggs up out of the water

Instructions for the GHETTOBATOR

To make the Ghettobator you need to to start with placing the coolor in a periment spot. It needs to be by a outlet because of the heater. After the coolor is place on it's periment spot you need to put some water in until the water is about a inch high. Then what you want to do is attach the water heater to the bottom of the coolor. Afterwards you want to put two small bowls that are back to back in the coolor where the water is in. Next you want to get a plastic container and fill it with damp dirt. Finally you put the eggs inside the plastic container with the same side up as they were in the ground where you found them. then put the plastic container in the coolor on top of the bowls that are stacked up. Plug in the water heater and you are done.

By this time, we realized that putting our data on a spreadsheet might be more realistic, so see below....
